Artist notes about "motherfish"
The fish considered as a symbolic figure representing nature. It can be difficult for us land mammals to meet an aquatic figure in a place of understanding, especially a creature that we hunt, eat & chase...and even keep as a visual treat.
but I also see the fish as a perfect gauge of our overall natural health...an ambassador to the sustainability of our waterways and an indication of our potential future, or demise.
Mass krill harvesting causes me such a negative physical reaction that I haven't yet been able to tackle a painting related to how despicable I find it, and so I'll start with a humble single fish.
I started with a sketch of a woman in a scuba suit, using a human invention to get down to the level of the fish, but the more I thought about it, I wanted to indicate human intervention as causing a sort of suffering.
I'm not high on my horse there, I eat fish occasionally, and I love fishing as a hobby...but I suppose I'm extra-thoughtful about it.
